Horse Quality Hay for Sale We have 60 acres of cropland in hay, 20 acres of which was reseeded in 2006. Over the next couple of years we will be reseeding the balance of our cropland to grass hay. We will be reseeding predominately timothy with the balance in brome and orchard grass. Since we have horses, we understand how critical it is to have clean, dust-free hay that is predominately grass. We reseeded 14 acres two years ago with 70% timothy, 20% alfalfa and 10% white clover. Where possible we cut in the morning to reduce sugar levels in the harvested hay. We monitor the weather constantly and only cut the quantity of hay at one time that we can get under cover rain free. All our hay is guaranteed dust free. If you should open a bale that is dusty, we will replace it, no questions asked. The summers of 2008 and 2009 have both been incredibly difficult in producing quality hay. Prolonged rains and high humidity until late in August has made it extraordinarily difficult to harvest horse quality hay. We did a massive harvest in August both years. This hay is overmature but with the rain there is considerable regrowth within the stand. It has been harvested with no rain and we have gone to considerable lengths to ensure it is baled dry and clean. In spite of everything, we put in 2200 small square bales and 130 rounds of hay exceeding our own needs. We have a small amount of hay available during the winter of 2009/10. A farm accident put Laurie on the sidelines for this haying season so we backed off our production. Several acres of hay will be mowed back into the field. For that reason we are limiting large outside orders. All square bales are stored inside. Our feeling is that the weather we have had for the last two summers may be the norm for several more years. Therefore in 2010 we will be trying to harvest in the clear window that have come to expect in early June setting us up for a second cut in August. That will reduce volume but should make for a higher protein hay without sacrificing quality re clean and dry. 2010 Hay Prices The following are our prices if your order is booked before the end of June, 2010. Small square bales picked up at the barn (Stored inside) $3.50 first cut, $4.00 second cut if available 4' by 4.5' hard core Round bales $30 (first cut only) – please enquire, special order only All bales are guaranteed dust free. Any dusty bales are replaced, no questioned asked. These prices are guaranteed until June 30, 2010. 2011 Hay Sales Starting in 2011 we will only be producing small square bales by special order in small batches ie under 200 bales. The price will be set at the beginning of the season. Likewise round bales will be available in 2011 by special order only. We will no longer be maintaining an inventory of small and large round bales for sale. Our crop land is going to be rotated into small grain crops before reseeding to hay over the next several years.
